                                                                                       Meetings Mean Business

As you may know, business and leisure travel are down considerably due to the current state of the economy. In particular, business meetings and large-scale events in Las Vegas, Orlando, San Diego and other cities have been canceled in response to recent negative comments made by government officials (including President Obama) and the media. The knee-jerk reaction to "punish" those companies receiving taxpayer bailouts is doing great harm to the entire travel industry and its many hard working employees, as well as the communities in which they live and work.

The following information is self-explanatory. Review it, then to write a letter, send an email, or place a phone call (or all three) to your elected representatives in the U. S. Senate and the House of Representatives, and to the White House.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION - SEND AN EMAIL, WRITE A LETTER, OR PLACE A PHONE CALL!

Forward this information to friends, family and colleagues and urge them to take action.

WASHINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) - Hotel and other travel executives pressed President Barack Obama last Wednesday about the downturn in bookings for business meetings and other events they blame largely on negative sentiment fueled by government and media comments about corporate spending during recession.

"Travel will play a critical role in driving America's economic recovery," Jonathan Tisch, co-chairman of Loews Corp and Chairman of Loews Hotels, said after he and other travel executives met with Obama at the White House.

The U.S. Travel Association, which lobbies for hotels and other businesses, said the session with Obama partly focused on "the need to maximize the benefits of meetings and events," which the group said generates more than $1 billion in spending and creates more than 1 million jobs.

Travel executives have tied sudden problems at their businesses to recent sharp criticism of corporate travel (particularly by companies that receive bailout money) from Obama, other government officials, and the media.

The following link will help you find the email, phone number, and mailing address of your U. S. Senators, your Representative in the U. S. House, and other important government officials. Email is probably the easiest way to send your opinion, but you may want to follow up in writing or with a phone call.

Dear: ____________________________,

I am writing to express my concern about a disturbing trend that has the potential to inflict significant damage on our local economy.

Recently, high-profile public companies that received emergency funding from the government have been vilified for using taxpayer dollars on travel for meetings, events and incentive programs.  Critics of these companies have mislabeled meetings and events as lavish and unnecessary.  As a result, any business that holds meetings or rewards its employees is thinking twice before it devotes resources to travel.

The consequences of a decline in travel for meetings and events are significant, considering that this type of travel creates $101 billion in spending and one million jobs.  Every community in the country pays a high price when visitors decline.

When business meetings and incentive travel programs are demonized and canceled, American workers – not CEOs – are the ones who pay the price.  Bellmen, maids, wait staff and other hourly wage employees – the backbone of our domestic workforce – are the first to lose their jobs as travel declines.  In fact, without the jobs generated by meetings and events, the unemployment rate in the United States would jump from 7.6 percent to 8.2 percent.

Meetings and conventions also contribute nearly $16 billion in tax receipts at the federal, state and local level.  Given the poor financial situation of America’s cities and states, cuts to the tax base of communities could mean additional cuts to essential public services.

Travel for meetings, events and incentives is a cost-effective tool that companies use to strengthen business relationships; align and educate employees and customers; and compensate emp loyees for business performance.  Even Members of Congress have shared this perspective when reflecting on the benefits of their annual retreats.

In our weak economy, the last thing Congress should do is implement policies or spout overheated rhetoric that jeopardizes jobs and the local tax revenue my community depends upon.  I urge you to oppose any measure that would unfairly restrict companies’ ability to use meetings, events and incentive travel as a legitimate business tool.

Sincerely,

White House says it encourages business travel

Press secretary: President believes strong tourism industry is important

The Associated Press
Thursday, March. 12, 2009

LAS VEGAS - The White House on Thursday encouraged Americans to travel, soothing words for the tourism industry that had complained for weeks that a remark from the president about corporate junkets had a chilling effect on business travel.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama was not discouraging travel when he said last month that businesses receiving federal bailout money should not be taking junkets.

"The president believes it's important to have a strong tourism industry and that it's important that, as the president said earlier ... that we shouldn't retrench," Gibbs said. "He would encourage people to travel."

Obama made the comment last month while promoting his stimulus bill at Indiana town hall meeting. Asked about corporate largesse and the federal bailout, the president said: "you can't get corporate jets, you can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer's dime."

Nevada officials have said the remark has discouraged travel among all companies skittish about being perceived as wasteful. At least three large banks recently have canceled meetings in Las Vegas. The impact was felt in city already badly bruised by the recession.

Tourism officials estimate cancellations have cost the region's tourism-related businesses about $132 million since October.
Gibbs said Thursday that the president was referring specifically to companies "that are getting large amounts of public funding."

"The president does have great concern with public money being used for that," he said. Gibbs added that the president's comment was "very clear," and passed on a chance to express regret.

Tourism advocates, who met with Obama Wednesday, praised the White House statement.

"These comments are extremely positive for the 1 million employees in this industry whose livelihood depends on business meetings and events," said Geoff Freeman, senior vice president of the U.S. Travel Association.

U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., called the remarks "a boost to our tourism and convention industry."

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, who once demanded an apology from the president, said no apology was necessary.

"We got the message across that the president was not trying to disparage Las Vegas," Goodman told The Associated Press.

Also Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid asked Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner to create guidelines on luxury spending for companies receiving bailout money through the Troubled Assets Relief Program.

Reid said the guidelines would provide clarity for those business accepting the money and those who don't.

"It could also assure the broader business community that conventions and meetings are a routine and accepted part of running a successful enterprise in the country," Reid wrote.

Tax Day Tea Party

Tea Parties Sweeping the Nation
We The People Stimulus Package

The Tax Day Tea Party is a national collaborative grassroots effort organized by Smart Girl Politics, Top Conservatives on Twitter, the DontGo Movement and many other online groups/coalitions.

The Tea Party protests, in their current form, began in early 2009 when Rick Santelli, the On Air Editor for CNBC, set out on a rant to expose the bankrupt liberal agenda of the White House Administration and Congress. Specifically, the flawed "Stimulus Bill" and pork filled budget.

During Rick's rant, he called for a "Chicago tea Party" where advocates of the free-market system could join in a protest against out of control government spending.

A few days later, grassroots activists and average Joe Americans began organizing what would soon become the Nationwide Chicago Tea Party effort.

On February 27th, an estimated 30,000 Americans took to the street in 40+ cities accross the country in the first nationwide "Tea Party" protest.

Organizers of the February 27th events pledged to continue on with an even bigger and better protest to follow the first. With April 15th being "Tax Day", it was decided to schedule the second round of Tea Party protests to ride alongside the tax deadline.

The following is a list of CONFIRMED Tea Party Tax Revolts planned within the state of Maryland. Please note that we ONLY list events happening on April 15th.
