Justice, Revisited

Court of Appeal increases rape sentences after victims and families challenge the original outcome

The Court of Appeal has increased the sentences of two teenage boys convicted of raping two girls, overturning the original decision after it was referred under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

The judgment follows significant public concern and, most importantly, the unwavering determination of the victims and their families, who continued to push for accountability despite the immense personal toll.

The case is a powerful reminder that legal decisions can be challenged, and that review mechanisms matter. It also highlights the reality that survivors and families are too often required to fight long after a conviction simply to see the seriousness of sexual violence properly recognised.

Today's decision brings a greater sense of justice for these families. But it is also a sobering reflection that it took sustained advocacy, public scrutiny and extraordinary resilience to reach this point.

At Make Yourself Heard, we know that meaningful review processes are essential. Survivors should not have to carry the burden of fixing a system after the fact simply to have the harm they experienced recognised appropriately.

P.S Congratulations to the team at Proudmans on today's Court of Appeal judgment.

Your dedication to supporting Jazmine and her family, and your commitment to challenging injustice, has helped achieve an outcome that better reflects the seriousness of these offences. A reminder that persistence, advocacy and the ability to challenge decisions can make a meaningful difference.

A significant step towards justice.

Justice shouldn't depend on how hard survivors have to fight to be heard.
