The Other Side of the World Cup

Why domestic abuse organisations are speaking out
during the World Cup

As the FIFA World Cup gets underway, domestic abuse organisations across the UK are preparing for what can be one of their busiest and most challenging periods of the year. Research has consistently found that reports of domestic abuse can increase during major football tournaments, with studies showing incidents rise by 38% when England loses and by 26% when they win or draw.

Crucially, football does not cause abuse - abusers do. However, heightened emotions, alcohol consumption and existing patterns of coercive or controlling behaviour can contribute to an increased risk of harm.

Charities including Women’s Aid, Refuge and the National Centre for Domestic Violence are using the tournament to raise awareness, prepare services and ensure survivors know where to turn if they need support. Many organisations are also challenging the idea that football, alcohol or disappointment can ever be used as an excuse for abusive behaviour.

This conversation is not new. In 2024, M.Y.H founder Jade Blue was proud to support Solace’s No More Injury Time campaign, which highlighted the reported increase in domestic abuse incidents linked to major football tournaments. The campaign sought to spark uncomfortable but necessary conversations, reminding the public that behind the excitement of the game, some women and children face a very different reality.

As fans come together to support their teams this summer, it’s also an opportunity to check in on those around us, challenge harmful attitudes, and ensure that everyone can enjoy the tournament safely.
