New Consultation on the Victims’ Code

The UK Ministry of Justice has opened a public consultation on a draft revised Victims’ Code, running until 30 April 2026

The Victims’ Code is intended to set out the rights victims can expect throughout the criminal justice process - including access to information, support, participation and respectful treatment. While its foundations are widely seen as important, many people continue to experience gaps in awareness, communication and consistent delivery.

This consultation is an opportunity to help strengthen what exists.

It seeks views on how agencies assess and respond to victims’ needs, how and when victims are communicated with and invited to participate, and how rights under the Code can be made clearer and more deliverable in practice. There is also a specific focus on improving engagement with child victims.

If you’ve ever tried to understand your rights, advocate for yourself, support someone else, or work alongside victims, your perspective matters here. Lived experience, professional insight, and frontline knowledge all play a role in shaping what comes next.

This is an opportunity to use your voice - to help ensure the Code works as intended for those who rely on it.

Consultation deadline: 30 April 2026
